Unlimited space.
Unlimited energy.
A whole Universe to explore.
A disease free environment.
An enormous challenge.
It is incredibly exiting!
If we had an environment with no bacteria or viruses, we have less need for our immune system. If the immune system is no longer needed to defend our body against all the bugs, it might be possible to change it into a cell repair system. If our cells could be maintained in perfect working order, continually repairing the damage of everyday use, they would no longer need to divide. Cell division is the main cause of ageing, because there is a finite limit to the number of times a cell can divide and remain viable. The Bible would be proved right! Everlasting life!
The light speed barrier would not stop us exploring the universe as individuals.

When people die of aids, it is not the aids that has killed them, but all the bugs, there is a cure for aids, it is space, where there are no bugs. I ask myself is this another coincidence? One of the worst problems we would encounter, would be radiation in space, but with some of the advances in nuclear science, we can construct adequate defences, after all Mother Earth is able to do it. When I have proposed space as the answer to all our problems, people usually say that it is too expensive. The way our society works, everything is evaluated in terms of money. Things do not cost money, the real cost is, the work that goes into producing what we buy. We are brought up from being children, to believe that the most important thing in life is money. It is tragic fact that many people will do literally anything to get it. Some people even seem to worship it!

Money itself has no intrinsic value. You cannot eat it or wear it and unless you burn it, it will not keep you very warm. All it is, is a route to other people's labour, and a way to manipulate people, in order to accumulate status and power. When I have asked people whether they thought life was a game or a story, they usually reply that it is a game. Life for modern humanity seems to be a money game and the more money an individual has, the greater the score. This, to my analysis is killing the environment, efficiency is only seen in terms of profit, this is a very narrow definition. The nature of society is hierarchical, therefore the contemporary economic definition of efficiency, is only efficient for those at the apexes of all those social and economic pyramids. If this is true, we do not require money to construct ourselves a viable environment in space.

We should be motivated by the desire to stop our young sliding into decadence. The driving force behind this is a lack of understanding to the purpose of human life. We need to replace the garden of Eden we found, before we started chopping down all the trees and covering everything with concrete. We must halt the processes which make so many species extinct, and most of all, we must stop the boredom.

In terms of our industrial processes, efficiency is seen as a route to profit. Some people define profit as the process of taking as much as possible and giving as little as possible. I define efficiency as a lack of waste, not profit, an engineer would define efficiency as power to weight ratio.

I do not believe it efficient To be murdering the Mother of our species.

For some of us, where we are now, does not look a very nice place, this increases the likelihood that we will look elsewhere. How bad do things have to get before we realise that radical problems need radical solutions.

A beautiful hypothesis that increases the likelihood, that there is some sort of overall organisation to life on earth, is the Gaia hypothesis, stated thus: The balance of oxygen to other gases in the atmosphere always remains the same at sea level, (If I remember right, it is about 21% ) if this balance does not remain exactly the same, the problems would be catastrophic.

Too much oxygen and anything combustible that got slightly warm. Would burst into flames. Too little oxygen and we would be gasping for breath. Every time oxygen is breathed or burned. More oxygen is created (But not too much). This leads one to the conclusion that it is being controlled in some way. One possible mechanism, are the single cell organisms that float in the oceans. These cells are called diatoms, they take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. It has been observed that there are giant mats of these diatoms, which constantly change in size. The inference is that they increase or decrease in size depending on the oxygen ratio. Many thanks to James Lovelock for the above knowledge. If the Earth could be thought of as a single living organism, like a tree, then a reasonable hypothesis is, that our crazy history can be explained thus: The "Bifurcating Ecotree" which is our species Mother, wants to sow her seed in space and the Sun, which is our species Father wants to stop wasting all that beautiful loving energy, on lifeless rock in space.

From the study of biological systems it becomes apparent that the principle of symbiosis is very much in evidence, between plants and bees, trees and fungi, mammals and savanna etc. It is probable that the principle of symbiosis is global. This probability begs the question where does humanity fit into this symbiosis. My theory does give an answer to that question.

One of the breakthroughs with chaos theory, was the discovery of a mathematical pattern called the Mandelbrot set, this has been described by many mathematicians as the most complex mathematical pattern ever discovered. It was discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot. The equation (strange attractor) that drives the complexity (phase space) of the Mandelbrot set is p * p - q * q + a this equation is very simple. The resulting graphical pattern is infinitely complex. This leads to the axiom, that all complexity has an underlying simplicity. When this axiom is applied to the complexity of life on earth, The answer, DNA, which is the simple 4 bit code that designates the form and function of every species on Earth.

In the debate between determinism and non determinism. One asks is there a global purpose to the Human species? Or put another way, is there a holistic meaning to humanities existence? I answer this question with another question, that is; What is the meaning of meaning? Form, function and direction is my answer. Our form and functions are known. The non determinism to this fundamental question, comes with the ignorance of our evolutionary direction. This ignorance arises from the observation of humanities complexity, the resolution to this ignorance comes with the discovery of the underlying simplicity to this complexity. Stated thus; DNA replicates its self, the earth is as a living cell of DNA, humanity is the agent to replicate that DNA in the universe, in chaos theory this is known as self simularity.

It has been thought that life originally came from the sea, if this is true then a long time ago. A species of fish must have evolved lungs and legs thus enabling life to colonise the land. Using the same kind of logic, points to the fact that the evolution of humanities technology has enabled life to colonise space. It would be rather silly if this is true, to go back in time and say to that species of fish that had evolved lungs and legs to stay in the sea!

Every cell in our body is an individual that can communicate with other cells, whilst containing a picture of the whole body within its DNA.This has been shown by the cloning of a new mammal from one cell of an organism. Individual cells have a certain degree of autonomy. Does each cell know that it is part of a larger individual? Life has an inbuilt self simularity. Another way of saying this is to say that the human body is greater than the sum of its parts. Jesus understood this, illustrated by his statement that every hair on your head is numbered.

Judging from the fact that the average person does not seem to love his fellow, I would say that people do not consider themselves to be part of a larger individual. I believe that all the different life forms on our planet make one single super organism.

If all humanity has a common ancestry, then we all came from one place.

It is apparent therefore that before we became 'civilised' we were on the move for thousands of years. We have been everywhere on Earth, to the top of the mountains and to the bottom of the sea.

WE ARE FUNDAMENTALLY NOMADIC.

There is only one direction left to explore.

We are born with an innate sense to seek out new pastures. There is a need for a belief in the promised land. This diminishes as we grow older. If we do not recognise that young people need realisable dreams, we are condoning increasing levels of decadence such as car theft, sexual deviance, drug taking, street violence and cultural violence. Many young people today can perceive no future, no dreams, no challenges, no meaning, and no positive collective aspirations.

Before Darwin when anyone in England asked the question; What does life mean? They were answered with Christianity and the Bible, after Darwin we have most of our society, thinking life is an accident ( I do not feel like an accident). In some ways meaning is supplied by direction. Whilst we are on a journey life has a meaning and intent. The twists and turns of humanities journey through the historical record have evolved us to be what we are. This can be difficult to perceive, because when we consider evolution, we tend to see other species as wholes and ourselves as individuals and not as members of the same species. Most people lose objectivity when they analyse our species. Especially when it comes to the definition of the word work.

People usually consider our science and technology to be a function of our intelligence. I believe our science and technology to be a function of our evolution, not our intelligence. If we were an intelligent species, we would not be behaving in such an irresponsible fashion. (We are killing our biosphere).

In the main most other species are adapted to the environment, the difference between us and other species, is that we take the environment and adapt it to our own needs and in doing so, take it away from the living organisms that previously occupied that space. Why not have the courage and wisdom, to take our ability to create an environment and go somewhere, where there is virtually unlimited freedom to do so?

The human race is now expanding into less and less space.

I was given a lovely analogy, by a hitch hiking philosopher, which can be stated thus: Consider, a youth of about 17 unemployed, immature, untidy and irresponsible. Such a youth usually acts as a parasite on his parents, until they get fed up with this and suggest that the time has come for him to move on and set up his own home independent of them. It could be said the human species is like that youth. As a species we have only been around for approx. 1 or two million years, compared with other species on this planet, this is a short period of time. (A shark has been a shark for 400 million years!) So when Jesus said we should be as children, he knew what he was talking about.

The Earth is our Mother.
The Sun is our Father in Heaven.
They have evolved us to be what we are.
As a species we are immature and irresponsible.
Compared with the other species we share the planet with.
We are the most terrible parasite that ever was.
It is about time the human race grew up.

We are outgrowing our cradle.

Excuse the swearing, but we are shitting in our nest.
I believe the three main causes of war to be:

1, Lack of space.
2, Lack of energy resources.
3, Boredom.

We are gathering all three in abundance at a frightening rate.

I have seen a graph of the crime rate over the last 200 years, it is a sine wave, with each peak in the line coinciding with a war. This suggests that crime is at it's highest just before a war and at its lowest just after a war. It seems to suggest that society is like a pressure cooker, and the only way to relieve the pressure is to have another war. This is no longer a viable proposition. Imagine the level of destruction, if the present day weapons had been available in the second world war. The only way out is up.

To those who say we would take the pollution up there with us I would say;" yes, we are the pollution on Earth", but I define this pollution as the poisoning of a biosphere. The best scientific knowledge suggests that the only biosphere in our solar system is Earth. So if we take the raw materials available on the moon and in the asteroid belt, take into account 24 hours of high power sunshine. We can create biospheres. If we were to poison those biospheres, then we should look to our design skills.

How do we get the whole thing off the ground?

I read of a beautiful idea in a scientific magazine called Omni. It suggested the use of virtual reality systems to control robots on the moon. This would enable us to build the first colony more efficiently because robots need only raw energy. On the rocket we could put machine tools and intelligent systems which can build both more machinery and the necessary superstructure to house a biosphere. We now have the ability to use our hands at a distance.

The high cost to the human race's colonisation of space, is caused by the complexity and danger of reaching and leaving escape velocity within the earth's atmosphere whilst carrying the fuel up from the earth's surface with which to do so.

The Space Shuttle turned out to be an expensive dangerous white elephant, the reason the Shuttle was so expensive is, because of its complexity with millions of different manufactured parts. There is another route, we can reach the edge of space no problem Burt Rutan proved this with Space Ship one, when he won the 'X' prize by reaching over 100 km twice in one week. Yes the Shuttle was 'reusable' but in name only. They could not have turned that around in a week. One idea could be to create rocket fuel on the moon, there is lots of water on the moon, use solar energy to split the moon's water into hydrogen and oxygen which makes very good rocket fuel. Use the rocket fuel to fuel a space tug, use the space tug to accelerate and decelerate Space Ship One, to and from escape velocity in the safety of a vacuum.

The moon is the door to the solar system.

To those people who doubt our ability to colonise space, I would point to the achievement represented by, the building of the pyramids. Contrary to popular opinion, there is evidence that points to them being built voluntarily, rather than by slaves. They did it because they wanted to from a religious motivation. Some of the blocks of stone were 50 tons and more. As far as we know, all they used were ramps, rollers and massive ingenuity. I would propose that it was a superb demonstration of what can be possible if human beings have a common goal.

I ask myself is it a coincidence that both the Mayans and the Egyptians left behind masterpieces of ingenuity? Both built pyramids and both worshipped the Sun.
